I honestly had no idea I had accumulated so many mascaras till I sat down to compile this post ( #makeupjunkie #hoarderproblems )
I know most people swear by mascara, but I didn’t start to see the benefit of it until very recently, once I started wearing it more often. A lot of the “no-makeup-makeup looks” actually rely on mascara largely to achieve the open-eyed look.
So, continuing with the Tried & Tested theme, here are my thoughts on some of the mascaras I have tried recently.
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($23, here)
A Holy Grail product for many, this was a bit of a disappointing product to me. It’s meant to be volumizing, separating and curling, but I found it to be clumpy. Some say it works better once it’s a bit older so I might try it again in a few weeks. The new waterproof version is getting better reviews, though.
Benefit They’re Real Lengthening and Volumizing Mascara ($24, here)
I’ve received about 3 or 4 samples of this mascara since it launched, and I’ve gone through them quickly. I LOVE it. It lengthens the lashes and coats them very evenly, separating them beautifully. It holds a curl really well, too. It does not really add much volume, but the overall look is perfect. Definitely recommended! Comes in several colours now, too.
Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara ($16.50, here)
My favourite of the lot! This mascara is an all-rounder. It is very long lasting, and curls the lashes, while adding length and volume too. Just one coat is perfect for day-time, and can be layered up for a more intense look. There’s no fall-out, no clumping and no smudging.
Marc Jacobs O!Mega Lash Volumizing Mascara ($26, here)
In short – nice, but nothing to write home about. It’s decent and coats the lashes well, but I would not pick this over most of the other options listed here. I also tried the new Marc Jacobs Noir Mascara and I would not recommend it at all as it bleeds all over the face.
Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara ($21, here)
Got a sample of this from Sephora, and I liked it so much that I ordered a full size. This is a more ‘dry’ formula, I believe, and gives a more fluttery look. Another good all-rounder and less known mascara, possibly.
Fairy Drops Scandal Queen Waterproof Mascara ($25, here)
This was a total Youtube enabled purchase (we’ve all been there), and is a popular Korean beauty product, apparently. It has a very interesting wand, and being a water proof formula, it does last long. However, in terms of performance, I don’t think that this adds any volume, and in fact it separates my lashes so much that I feel they actually look a bit thin. Bit of a fail, for me.
Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes ($32, here)
The most recent launch of the lot, I got this mascara when I saw Wayne Goss rave about it. First of all – the PACKAGING. OMG. How beautiful?! The actual product is also very good – it adds volume, length and lift all at once, and just with one coat. It can easily be layered on and it does look like you are wearing mascara, but not in a bad clumpy way. Unfortunately, this is not waterproof and it runs quite easily at the slightest contact with water. Boo!
Scroll down to the pictures and video to see how it wears.
Maybelline The Falsies Push Up Drama Mascara ($11, here)
One of the only drugstore mascaras in the list, this is also a more recent launch. I think it gives a very similar impact to the Clinique mascara – just not as much of a curl. Pretty good, specially for the price. I do find the packaging a bit bulky, though.
Makeup Forever Smoky Extravagant Mascara ($24, here)
Great brush for separation and use on the upper lash line, but a bit tedious to use on the lower lashes. This mascara is good for volume, but it does smudge a little. Good product, but nothing extraordinary for me, again.
Sephora Full Action Extreme Effect ($12, here)
This was one of my most used everyday mascaras for a while. A very wet formula, this almost feels like it has little fibres that add to the length and volume of the lashes. I use the brown shade, which is perfect for everyday wear. For the price, this is definitely a great buy.
Honorary mention to the Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Lashes Mascara, which is unreal when applied. I love layering this over my Clinique mascara for the perfect doll-eyed look. The Dior Show is also a good one, and comes in a range of colours!
It is SO difficult to photograph the effect of a mascara, but here is my lame attempt at it.
On the left is a “before” and on the right is an “after”…Colours vary because of natural light.
What are some of your favourite mascaras? x
